Product Development Is NOT Product Manufacturing

Joe Donoghue, San Diego Prototyping, Patents & Prototypes, Live Web Show, Product Development, Engineering Services, Manufacturing, Entrepreneurial Product DevelopmentIf you are looking to develop a product, it’s important to know the key differences between product development and product manufacturing. The two terms are often confused and the expectations of each are vastly different.

What Is Product Development?

Product development requires that a creative team of engineers, industrial designers and program managers work in sync to solve unique problems related to functionality, design, standards and the costs of a product idea.

By in large, a process is followed and often referred to as the product development lifecycle. This lifecycle includes gates and checkpoints that help the product development team reduce failure rates, avoid common pitfalls and design the product for manufacturability.

Generally, the product development lifecycle can take far longer than the actual manufacturing of a product. When performed correctly, product development will reduce manufacturing time and costs by achieving the aforementioned goals.

Product Manufacturing

After the product development has been completed and production prototypes have been fully qualified, manufacturing is ready to begin. A well designed product can be replicated thousands of times with consistent performance results directly off the production line.

Comparatively, manufacturing a product is easier since most variables and unique problems to that particular product have been solved and worked into the production prototype which was designed with manufacturability in mind.

Common pitfalls to watch for during product manufacturing include quality control, materials sourcing issues, labor problems and missed delivery dates.

Product Development Problems

Joe Donoghue, San Diego Prototyping, Patents & Prototypes, Live Web Show, Product Development, Engineering Services, Manufacturing, Entrepreneurial Product DevelopmentProduct Development Problems Can Balloon Quickly

Regardless of the experience of the team, product development problems will arise during your product development process. The ability to recover from these problems will largely dictate the overall success of the product.

At Leardon Solutions, new clients sometimes come to us with problems that need immediate solutions to save the product from certain death. Problems can arise in any number of areas from prototyping to manufacturing. If the project has been mismanaged to any degree, only a highly experienced team can right the boat for smooth sailing with minimal damage and loss of speed.

If you have found yourself in a bind with your current vendors and suppliers, not all hope is lost. Teams like Leardon work tirelessly to correct problems with your current vendors to avoid the cost overruns associated with moving tooling to other vendors, renegotiating contracts and repairing damaged relationships/partnerships.

Like the game of Dominoes, failures in the pipeline will affect the overall product. Do not allow your product development problems to balloon to the popping point, step in and get a second opinion if you feel uncomfortable with the current process.

The Best Industrial Design

Leardon Solutions Product Development, Joe Donoghue, San Diego, prototyping, manufacturing, industrial designCreating The Best Industrial Design

Creating the most effective industrial design is no easy task. Achieving the best design that accommodates all aspects of a great product which can be produced for a profit is a tricky proposition that takes more than a just a great design eye to achieve quality fit, form and function.

It is important not to over complicate the process of finding the right design for your product idea. Here are some tips that may help guide you down the right path and help you avoid getting overwhelmed or frustrated to the point where you throw in the towel.

Leardon Solutions Industrial Design

1) Do not re-invent the wheel

Are there products on the market that have functions or designs similar to yours, but you think your product can do the same task faster, better or cheaper? Head to the store to play with those products and ask yourself what they did right with their designs and what they didn’t do so well. Are the buttons in the right place? Does the chosen material make the product feel like a quality product? Is the product worth the price they’re asking for it? Does it stick out from the crowd sitting on the shelf? What other types of products does it look like?

2) Hire an industrial designer with access to a product development team

Few things are more frustrating than spending months on an awesome design only to discover that it can’t be manufactured on a larger scale. You will discover that the best industrial design ideas incorporate design for manufacturability. Keep this in mind as you look for an industrial designer that fits your style and ask if the product is being designed with manufacturability in mind. Often, experienced industrial designers will work hand in hand with a product development team as they develop the concept.

3) 3D printing vs. real world manufacturing

While there a number of ways that you can create great a 3D embodiment of your product, don’t fall into the trap of believing a 3D / rapid prototype is going to be final product design. While 3D printing a rapid prototyping is a great and inexpensive way to get an idea of your industrial design, it falls short of proving fit and function verification. If you have a product with multiple moving parts and complex internal functions, a machined prototype mock-up will help prove the concept more effectively and expose any major problems early on in the product development life cycle before those problems are uncovered in production.

4) Hire an experienced industrial designer

Even if your product has the best fit and function, it may not sell simply based on it’s appearance. The best industrial designers understand design, usability, design trends, human behavior and some engineering. A great industrial design places a product within a industry but also makes it stand out. It’s a fine balance.

5) The Wow factor

If you are aiming to sell your product in retail, one of the most important aspects of drawing the consumer in is the “Wow!” factor. The “Wow!” factor is a combination of great design, function, fit and magic. It’s a product that doesn’t scare a consumer off, but instead draws them in by combining familiar fit, form and functions with innovative and outside the box thinking added to all three.

Southern California is an amazing place to be involved in product development with entrepreneurs and businesses from all industries including medical devices, consumer products, action sports products and electronics products to name a few. One place to look at when looking for inspiration for product development is Orange County.

Orange County is home to some of the best known brands on Earth, but what is interesting to us as a product development company in Southern California, is the small unsung heros of innovative products that also reside in the area often lurking in the shadows of large global companies. Recently, Martian Watches was featured on a local program in San Diego with their director of marketing Pam Neimi and president Stan Kinsey along with Leardon Solution’s Joe Donoghue and InterContinental IP’s Eric Hanscom. Martian Watches is headquartered in Orange County, more specifically, the Irvine area.

Martian Watches is leading the way with wireless technologies evangelized by their latest and greatest line of products ” Voice Command Watches for iPhone & Android “. You can see more of their products here. They are a small agile team with a lot of passion and drive.

So what makes product development and innovation so great in Orange County?

1) Like San Diego, Orange County is home to smart entrepreneurs with a diverse range of backgrounds that lend themselves to multi-cultural and multi-experience dynamic teams that function well within the global economy

2) Experience, experience, and more experience – If you are an entrepreneur or business looking to add members to your team, you could hardly go wrong by looking in the Orange County area. Remember those huge companies that I mentioned in the second paragraph? Well like all companies, unfortunately they have to lay off a lot of great talent from time to time, giving a sprouting idea the experience and know how that it needs to becoming a real product ready for market.

3) Manufacturing – Manufacturing is coming back and for certain types of manufacturing, it never left. Orange County’s proximity to the Los Angeles industrial area offers a vast array manufacturing from metal work to plush toys.

4) Access to funding – Key to any product development regardless of it’s location such as San Diego or Orange County is the ability to raise funds for prototypes, inventory, production.. ect.. Orange County has a strong entrepreneur community supported by organizations that exist to serve those entrepreneurs. A few groups to check out would be: Tech Coast Angels, Southern California Venture Network and OCTANe.

5 ) University talentThe University of California at Irvine (UCI) provides both San Diego and Orange County with some of the best and freshest engineering and business talent any area could offer. University students eat, breath and sleep innovation. They are a huge asset to any team.

Entrepreneurial Product Development at UCSD

On May 17th 2012, Joe Donoghue of Leardon Solutions presented at the UCSD Rady School of Management. The was packed with MBA students that were also part of the Rady Entrepreneur Club.

Joe Donoghue, Leardon Solutions, Product Development, Southern California, Patents and Prototypes, UCSD, Rady School of Management

Joe’s presentation focused Entrepreneurial Product Development and overcoming obstacles.

This presentation was designed to help entrepreneurs, inventors and startups understand the pitfalls of traditional product development that often is not specifically designed to serve small product runs and prototypes.

Key points of the presentation included:

(1) Entrepreneurs usually have little money, little support, and little product volume which puts them at a disadvantage relative to larger competitors.

(2) Little money puts them in a position where they can’t hire their preferred staff.

(3) Little support results from the fact that the industry supporting entrepreneurs is very fragmented with hand-offs that minimize accountability.

(4) Little product volume puts them in a position of higher prices due to no economies of scale.

(5) To overcome the little money constraint: amortize engineering and fixed costs if possible and don’t lock up your money in large quantities of inventory.

(6) To overcome little support constraint: work with a supplier that is an end-to-end provider who understands entrepreneurs and start-ups

(7) To overcome little volume constraint: work with suppliers who do both engineering and manufacturing, making it worth their time to work with you.

How frozen pipes and flooded caravans led to the Floe product

Necessity is the mother of invention. This phrase succinctly describes Jason Paul, Managing Director and Founder of Apt Innovations, a Northern Ireland, UK based company. Apt Innovations develops and manufactures products that help owners of static and touring caravans, holiday homes, mobile homes, and motorhomes drain the water from the pipes of their homes, thus preventing broken pipes in freezing conditions.

Apt Innovations’ first product, the award winning Floe Drain Down Device, was conceived as Jason needed a simple way to winterize his home without having to make an appointment or pay a professional drain down technician. The Floe is a simple device that hooks to the outside hose tap and utilizes a tire compressor to blow out the excess water in the pipes. Apt Innovations’ Floe was written up in the BBC News article “Cold winter inspires NI man’s pipe business”, won the Best Accessory Award from Practical Caravan, and is making sales inroads in many countries around Europe.

Leardon: How did you come up with the idea for the Floë?

Jason: I own a static park home in the lakes area of Northern Ireland. Sadly we were caught out by bad frost which damaged part of the plumbing system and flooded the home. Normally you would pay someone about $180 to drain it at the end of the season, but this is an antiquated system that entails the service engineer trying to push the water back down through the system (the wrong way) in reverse from each faucet. Unfortunately this is not possible on showers as there are non return valves in them, which only allows water to come out of them (the right way). To a service engineer, the shower therefore must be dismantled, rendering the property useless over the winter months until spring.

I wanted to do two things. First I wanted to be able to drain the property myself, without paying someone and I wanted to use the property throughout the winter months as well as the summer. Therefore my idea connects to an outside tap, air is pushed into the system and water released from taps and shower (the right way) By doing this I do not have to dismantle the shower, so I can use the property whenever I like and drain on leaving. I tend to do this once at the end of the season and a few times in winter. At $180 per draindown, this could amount to just short of a thousand dollars. Floë costs less than $30 and can be used for years, not a bad return.

Leardon: What was the most important thing you learned about the prototyping and new product development process?

Jason: First, get a patent or at least a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA), then the next most important thing is to get the right people on board at the start. So many people go down a road without advice on relevant areas of their product. I would completely recommend that a company find a very experienced product development company to talk this though to the extent that there are no more surprises or guesswork. This will keep the price of product development and prototyping down to a minimum. Our such advisers were Leardon Solutions. Here you have two sides of advice, one for the business and selling of the product, i.e. what works and what doesn’t and second the engineering advice as to which is the most cost effective, yet visually appealing end product.

Leardon: How did you prototype the Floë?

Jason: I created a very ugly prototype for myself, which worked right through the winter. I then made some slightly more attractive but still inexpensive homemade versions that I sold to people for a very small price. Accepting payment means that there is some skin in the game from the customers and it also proves that people will pay something for an solution. Of course you could provide free samples, it is up to you. These worked for about 25 people through the next winter. It was then that we knew we had a potential product. We then got some Northern Ireland Government funding for a patent and prototype, which we then took to Leardon Solutions to create more basic prototypes and eventually the finished product.

Leardon: What did you learn about manufacturing a product? Any issues encountered?

Jason: It takes time. You need to take this time to get the product right. If you don’t, every thing else that you do can be flawed. A house can be stunningly beautiful, but if built on a flawed foundation, it could fall apart. A product is similar. Say you spend all of your time making a product, but there is a change that has been overlooked or not tested correctly. This could cause you problems. By the time you have realised it, you may have developed the packaging and photography which would all be wasted if the product has to be changed, or even sold some, in which case you will face returns.

Take time to test every opportunity and suspicion that you might have. I know most are bursting to get it onto the market but understand it will save you time in the long run.

Leardon: Why is Northern Ireland a great place to prototype and develop products?

Jason: Once upon a time Northern Ireland was a powerhouse in Engineering, Shipbuilding and Linen Manufacture. Much of the big industries sadly died away over the years leaving a large proportion of Service sector businesses in its stead. This is clearly not good for growth as manufacture and export are paramount. Northern Ireland has always had innovation brimming under the surface and now I am glad to say that local councils and Government are really pushing tech and innovation once again, really putting Northern Ireland on the world map again, so much so that the head of Government for Industry in China, felt it prudent to visit Northern Ireland last week

Leardon: What recommendations do you have for others with product ideas?

Jason: Get your product really ahead of the game and then when you are ready to be first to market, showcase the life out of it. It is being first to market that is important and stay there. Use every piece of homemade PR that you have in your arsenal. Magazines love to write articles for free on new stuff, in fact get someone to write it for you, then send it out to a range of media, who will print it up for you.

Time your marketing to when it will be most effective, particularly magazines. Newspapers and radio are more day by day but magazines take months. Also, use online forums etc, do a video and put it on youtube.com, then link it on your website. Use all of this.

Visit Apt Innovation’s website for more information and to get updates.
